We Reap the Full Harvest Of the Good Seed Sown, Only if We Persevere
We Then Must Persevere. "And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith." Galatians 6:9-10 And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended. And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred." Mark 4:14-20
We need this exhortation due to our natural tendency: a) to grow weary; because doing what is right is not easy work. b) wanting to see immediate results whereas it takes time to grow a crop, and the harvest may not come in our lifetime. "Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days." Eccl 11:1 Paul's words warn and encourage us against giving up when we should be persevering.
a) This word means to be (bad or) weak, that is, (by implication) to fail (in heart): - faint, be weary. The idea of discouragement, a failure of the will. b) In II Thessalonians 3:13 Paul exhorts , "But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing."
a) The word means to relax (literally or figuratively): - faint. b) While hard work now will produce proportionate abundance later, Paul is challenging us to remember that failing to persevere now will also produce proportionate poverty later. Note the word "opportunity" used in verse 10 is the same word used in verse 9 for "due season". Perseverance comes :
b) down to our faith focused on the Lord; his commands and promises,as found in his word. "For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope." Romans 15:4 "Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord." 1 Corinthians 15:58 "My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing." James 1:2-4 "The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands." Psalm 138:8 Back to Laws of the Harvest index
